Poodle: A Hunting Dog?
Did you know...the Poodle is considered to be the National Dog of France, yet was bred originally in Germany? In fact, the word "Poodle" is said to derive from the German word, "pudel", meaning, to splash in water.

Poodles really were originally bred to be hunting dogs in Europe! The distinctive way their fur is groomed arose from the need to make the poodle a better hunting dog. The dogs' thick coats were a hindrance in water and thick brush, so hunters sheared the hindquarters, with cuffs left around the ankles and hips to protect against rheumatism. Each hunter marked his dogs' heads with a colored ribbon, allowing groups of hunters to tell their dogs apart. So, the unique, dramatic grooming styles seen on Poodles actually began because of practical and functional reasons!
There are three categories for poodles: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard Poodle is the largest and oldest of the three varieties. The Miniature Poodle is the medium-sized variety. The Toy Poodle is the smallest variety. Poodles are highly adaptable to their environment. They are happy in a small apartment in the city or a house with a yard in the suburbs, as long as they get enough stimulation and exercise.
Poodles are considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds. Their good nature, intelligence and self-assured attitude are why the Poodle is and has been such a popular companion. These dogs are known for their even temperament and have a reputation as being people pleasers. They will go out of their way to make their owners happy. They generally bond to everyone in their human family instead of one person exclusively.
In this week's episode we meet Rose and her owner, Michelle Watson. We'll learn all about Michelle's love her standard sized poodle, how she dressed her up, and how they really do get confused for one another! We also touch on figuring out which is the right size poodle for you.
HERE’S THE POOP
Poodles are high–maintenance in the grooming department. A serious commitment of time is needed to groom a Poodle for health, not beauty reasons. A poodle’s fur can become matted and unruly in a short period of time. There is no specific, modern-day need for various clipping types. Choose whatever you think fits your dog’s personality best. One of the many advantages of this breed is that some people who are prone to pet-related allergies are able to live comfortably with a Poodle.
