Vizsla: The Hungarian Pointer

Do you hunt? Well here’s some trivia for you. What’s the oldest hunting dog in the world?

Hungary is home to one of the most energetic dog breeds in the world: the Vizsla. Most haven’t heard of this breed, but if you were a Hungarian King or Monarch during the 12th century in Eastern Europe, you’d know the Vizsla very well. They were man’s best friend of that generation.

The Vizsla, also known as the Hungarian pointer or “Gun Dog,” is the oldest hunting dog in the world, dating back to over one thousand years ago. The Vizsla was used not only as a great hunting dog, but also by the aristocracy as a sign of wealth and power. The barons and warlords preserved the breed because of its hunting ability, but with the onset of WWI they nearly became extinct.

When the Russians took over Hungary after WWII, there was a fear amongst Vizsla owners that once again, they would be pushed to the edge of existence. Thanks to the owners who left the country before the Russian invasion, the breed was preserved.

Today they are alive and well and you can’t find a more affectionate and devoted dog. They are definitely people oriented dogs; and since they are used to getting a lot of attention from kings and royalty, they love to be loved. They are very alert and watchful, making them excellent guard dogs. Another plus is that they are low maintenance, requiring minimal care to stay clean and healthy. As their lineage dictates, they are full of energy and need a lot of exercise, at least 45 minutes a day. The Vizsla’s gentle, lively, and friendly disposition makes it the perfect dog for any family!
