FEATURED RESCUE DOG: Gabby
One morning, Cooper, a Rat Terrier, was on his daily walk. At the end of every walk Cooper was trained to sit and wait at the front door while his owners, Nancy and David, removed his leash and walk inside. On that particular morning, Cooper as always sat and waited for his leash to be removed and for his owners to step inside. However, instead of following his owners into the house Cooper turned and ran down the steps and then down the street.
Nancy and David went into frantic pet owner mode and chased Cooper down the street. They saw Cooper make a turn up a neighbor’s front walk. When they got to where Cooper was they see him sitting and barking at the neighbor’s door. David and Nancy told Cooper to come but he refused. Then the neighbor opened the door to see what all the barking was about. When the neighbor opened the door Cooper ran past her and into the back of the house.
The neighbor looked surprised. “How did Cooper know?” she asked. “Know what?” Nancy and David said. The neighbor told Nancy and David she had been getting ready to call them and tell them that she had just rescued a 6 month female Rat Terrier puppy from a family that had not been able to care for her. She told them she was hoping to find the puppy a better home and was wondering if they would like her. Nancy and David looked at each other in surprise because they had been thinking the past couple of weeks that another Rat Terrier might be a good addition to the family. When they went inside the house Cooper was sitting outside the puppy’s crate waiting patiently for someone to let her out. They all laughed and decided that maybe Cooper knew that the puppy was meant to be theirs. So “Gabby” the new puppy came home with Cooper and his family. At first Gabby needed some extra attention and didn’t trust anyone. Soon, however, with Coopers help and a lot of love, Gabby learned to trust her new family. Gabby now enjoys morning walks with Cooper, chasing squirrels, and sitting in any lap she can find.
How did Cooper know?
Rat Terriers are known to be an extremely intelligent breed. They have a keen since of smell and tracking and were originally bred as efficient, intuitive hunters of small vermin on farms and ranches.
